1. Introduction
Welcome to SoberStreak AI (soberstreak.ai). We built this app to support your recovery journey. This policy is here to explain, in plain human language, what data we collect, how it's handled, and the choices you have. It applies however you use SoberStreak AI—on your phone or in your web browser at soberstreak.ai/app. Your privacy and trust are the foundation of everything we do.
2. What data we collect
To help you track your progress, we collect some specific information about your recovery. This includes your recovery type (like alcohol, drugs, or gambling), your sobriety start date, and your pledge history—including your streaks and check-ins. If you add a profile photo, we store that too. When you create an account, this information is securely stored in your private account on Google Firebase so it's safe and available across your devices. We also collect basic technical info, like your device type and app version, just to make sure the app keeps running smoothly for you.
AI Companion conversations. When you use the AI Companion, the messages you send and the Companion's replies are collected, along with any chats you organise into folders. This lets your conversations be saved so you can return to them. If you use a ghost chat, that conversation is not collected or saved (see 'How your data is stored' and 'How we use your data' below).
3. How your data is stored
Your account and recovery data are stored securely using Google Firebase, a trusted platform provided by Google. When you sign up, we create a private account for you, and your recovery details, account identifiers (like your email), and any profile photo are kept there. Firebase acts only as a processor on our behalf—your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and it stays private to your account. It's never visible to other users.
Your AI Companion conversations are stored the same way as your other data—securely, in your private account on Google Firebase, encrypted in transit and at rest, and accessible only to you. Ghost chats are an exception: they are never stored. A ghost conversation exists only while it is open and is gone the moment you leave it.
4. Cookies and local storage
SoberStreak AI uses a small amount of browser storage that is essential to how it works—never for advertising, and we use no third-party tracking or advertising cookies. On our website we store a single preference (your light or dark theme). When you use the web app in your browser at soberstreak.ai/app, we and Google Firebase store information on your device that is needed to keep you securely signed in and to remember your settings—for example your authentication session and app preferences. This information stays on your device, is used only to run the app, and you can clear it at any time through your browser settings (which will sign you out).
5. How we use your data
We use your data for one reason: to provide and improve the SoberStreak AI service. This means tracking your streaks, showing your progress, and sending the reminders you've asked for. We never sell your data to third parties. Sometimes, we work with service providers like Firebase or error-tracking tools to keep things running, but they only process data on our behalf under strict legal agreements.
AI Companion & third-party AI processing. The AI Companion generates its replies using a third-party AI provider (currently OpenAI). To produce a response, the content of your messages is sent securely to that provider. Your messages are also processed to detect signs of crisis, so we can show you support resources when they may help. We do not use your conversations to train AI models, and we do not sell your conversations to anyone. This processing applies to all chats, including ghost chats (the message is sent to generate a reply)—the difference with ghost chats is only that nothing is saved on our side.
6. Legal basis and your rights (GDPR)
If you're in the EU, our legal grounds for handling your data are primarily the performance of our contract with you (providing the app) and our legitimate interest in making the app better and more secure. You have the right to access, correct, delete, or move your data at any time. You can exercise these rights through our in-app settings or by simply emailing us at hello@soberstreak.ai.
7. Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account at any time from within the app—this removes your recovery data, journal entries, and profile photo from our systems. After deletion, we may keep limited information for a short period for backups or legal reasons before it is permanently deleted or completely anonymised.
AI Companion conversations. Saved chats are kept in your account until you delete them. When you delete a chat, it moves to a "Deleted" area and is held for around 30 days, after which it is permanently removed automatically. You can restore a deleted chat during that period, or delete it permanently straight away. Ghost chats are never saved and so are never retained. Deleting your account removes all your AI Companion conversations and folders.
8. Children's privacy
SoberStreak AI is designed for adults only (18+). If we discover an account is being used by a minor, we will close it and delete any related data to protect their privacy.
9. International transfers
Because we use global services like Firebase, your data may be processed in other countries. We always ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to keep your information protected, no matter where it is processed.
10. Changes to this policy
The recovery journey is always evolving, and so is our app. We may update this policy from time to time. You can always see exactly when it was last changed by checking the date at the very top of this page.
